Almora

Almora is a beautiful hill station destination located in the Central Himalayas. The town of Almora is famous for its history and culture, once begin ruled by the descendents of the Kyutar dynasty and Chand dynasty. Visitors can see many historical monuments belonging to different eras here. Traditional styles are seen clearly in home and roads constructions.

The town of Almora was established in 1568. One of the most interesting aspects of Almora is that it is situated in a peak which is half-circular, giving it a sort of unique positions amongst its surrounding areas. Unlike other hill stations which came into ring during the British raj, this is a hill stations which developed by the Indian population. Two beautiful rivers Kaushik (Koshi) and Shalmali (Suyal) flow out close by and the loveliness of the rivers, plus the mountain ranges makes this town to be one of breathtaking beauty. So lovely was the beauty of Almora that Mahatma Gandhi referred to it as ‘Switzerland of India’! Almora is also known for its exotic fruit varieties and you can see orchards of the best apples, plums, peaches, apricots and much more in when you visit this place.

Those visiting have a magnificent view of the Himalayan ranges from this town. Just about 2 Kilometers from Almora is the Bright End Corner, which is a scenic spot from which sunrise and sunset can be viewed over the Himalayan range. About 3 kilometers from Almora is a deep park, which is an oft visited tourist spot.

Right at the heart of Almora is the famous Nanda Devi temple, which is a must see for every person who visits here. Other important temples to visit here are Rudreshwar Mahadev Temple, Chitai, Jageshwar, Baijnath, Binsar Mahadev, and Garhnath. Almora is also well-known for the ‘Adwaita Ashrama’, established by Swami Vivekananda and also referred to as Mayabati . This is also an important spot to visit.

The best time to visit this enchanting hill station is between the month of April and June and then September and November. The nearest airport is in Pant Nagar in Nainital.
